Skulls of Salad Bar – Painted Skate Deck Series
The Skulls of Salad Bar series was created while I was dog sitting in a small town outside Boulder, Colorado. My days started at 4:30 AM with the sound of chickens, followed by coffee, smoke, and long hours of painting. I spent that time listening to Pool Rooms by ZeroFuturism, a soundtrack that colored the whole experience.
The house itself left a strong impression on me. The bathroom had a deep dark green tub, gold and white walls, and was full of plants with natural light pouring in. In contrast, the kitchen was always dim, and it was there that I painted strange decks filled with skulls, painting over them again and again until the idea finally clicked: salads. Each deck became a mix of different types of salad with a skull worked into it.
The Skulls of Salad Bar series came from that time — a mix of early mornings, heavy coffee, quiet small-town days, and raw painting energy. It remains one of the most personal and unusual painted series in Kaba’s history.
